I’d been taking pictures of the SL Navy detachment beating retreat at Galle Face Green, and when the young sailor carrying the tightly-reefed national flag did an about face, I realized his eyes were closed. I moved in closer and took a few more shots as he marched to the edge of the platform and descended the steps, all with his eyes closed. Sri Lanka Navy sailors lower the national flag at sundown in a twice-daily ceremony at the Galle Face Green, close to the country’s main harbour and naval base near the Colombo Fort. Galle Face, with its pier and promenade — the latter created during the days of the British Empire — is a popular evening venue for “Colombites”, and the military ceremony known as beating retreat attracts a fair share of curious onlookers.
