No roses here; just pure white frangipani in the interior of the Jaffna Fort in northern Sri Lanka, site of a bloody siege in 1990. Soldiers of the 6th Sinha Rifles, along with some policemen, were surrounded by Tamil Tiger troops who had captured the city of Jaffna. Although it was cut off from reinforcements, the fort was held for three months with occasional air resupply. Eventually an amphibious rescue mission was mounted to break the siege, but the fort was abandoned to the Tigers as it was an untenable position. The fort remained in Tiger hands until 1995, when it was recaptured by the Sri Lanka Army — along with the city of Jaffna — in a fifty-day battle.
