CRUMBLING GUARDIAN — A carved Nagaraja guards the steps to the ruined stupa of the 9th century Dakkinagiri Viharaya, in the Kaludiya Pokuna Forest, east of Dambulla. Shot on assignment for Serendib, the inflight magazine of @srilankanairlinesofficial . My photo story, “A Mountain Monastery Forgotten by Time”, was the cover feature of the March 2018 issue. GOODBYE CARLOBOY — Growing up in Colombo, the son of a Burgher father and a Tamil mother, ethnicity was never a part of my family identity, which was firmly centered in religion. I was already well into my twenties when I read Yakada Yaka, the first Sri Lankan English book of any sort I had read, and the first Sri Lankan book in any language that I had willingly submitted to. Blown away by it, I hungrily scarfed down The Jam Fruit Tree and the rest of the Von Bloss series, introduced at last to what it was to be a Burgher. I then read everything else of Carl Muller’s that I could find. Children of the Lion reintroduced me to the Lankan kings that I had been force-fed as a Sinhalese medium schoolboy in the 1970s and ’80s, convincing me that my country’s history was as interesting as that of Middle Earth. I met Carl Muller for the first time at the Gratiaen Prize ceremony in 2005, when we were both shortlisted for it. Neither of us won that year, though Mr Muller already had one of those under his belt. I did manage to tell him that it was his writing — and that of Nihal Silva — that had convinced me to give it a go in the first place. He seemed mildly amused at this. He smoked and I drank as I asked him as many questions as I could cram into those few minutes before he was dragged away by a publisher. The next time I met Carl Muller was the last time I would meet him; [to read more, follow the link in my bio] #writing #drinking #reading #carlmuller #death #rip #literature #remembrance #srilanka

YOUNG TROMBONIST — Band practice at a high school in the Colombo suburb of Dehiwela. EXPLORING THE RAJA WASALA, KANDY, SRI LANKA — The rather unimposing rear view of the Raja Wasala, or King’s Palace, which is part of the Maha Wasala — the Royal Palace complex in Kandy; itself part of the larger area dominated by the adjoining Temple of the Tooth. A long straight building, the Raja Wasala consists of a central hall and two flanking wings, overlooking the ramparts, and its frontal view provides an aspect more befitting its royal history. The palace’s proximity to the ramparts makes it clear that in spite of the moat and wall, the complex was never intended to be a defensive position. After the capture of Kandy by the British in 1815, the Raja Wasala became the official residence of Sir John D’Oyly, the government agent, until his death in 1821, and thereafter of his successors. Today, the Raja Wasala is a museum of the Department of Archeology, and exhibits a variety of ancient artifacts from the Kandyan Kingdom. In the photo, @shermainewillis and @iam__anuradha explore the long verandah that runs the length of the palace’s rear, overlooking the inner courtyard; shot on assignment for Ashraff Associates and @the.radh , Kandy in October 2018. #travelphoto #architecturalphotography #srilankanarchitecture #srilankanhistory #onassignment #ancientlanka #ashraffassociates #theradh #beautifuldestinations #lka #5DMkIV #24_105mm_f4l
STREET VENDOR, MAHARAGAMA, SRI LANKA — A vendor sells hand towels on the busy streets of Maharagama, a southeastern suburb of Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. Maharagama bookends one end of a sprawling textile bazaar that stretches over 5km to Pamunuwa. Constantly busy throughout the year, the area teems with shoppers and wholesale buyers during celebratory periods such as Christmas and Avurudhu, the Buddhist and Hindu new year. BANNERMEN — Another telephoto portrait, this one at 400mm; at a high school athletics meet in Katunayake, Sri Lanka. The combination of the 7DMkII and EF100-400mm/4.5-5.6L just continues to impress me with both its sharpness and beautiful rendering of colour. Shot on assignment for @theannualreportcompany and @gatewaycolleges in September 2018. #portraitphoto #sportsphoto #documentaryphoto #facesosrilanka #athletes #onassignment #smartmedia #gatewaycollege #srilanka #lka #7DMkII #100_400mm
