Vesak in the Galle Fort, Sri Lanka

A Buddhist flag flies over a Dutch period building in Sri Lanka’s Galle Fort, a Unesco Heritage site, and one of the most well-preserved examples of a fort of the Dutch East India Company. The May holiday of Vesak — a commemoration of the birth, death, and enlightenment of the the Buddha — is one of the most widely celebrated periods in the Buddhist-majority country.
