Udeta Biwwe Kendhadhe?

Office workers, security personnel, and off-duty policemen gather for a pre-breakfast drink of kola kendha (a soup made from leaves, rice, and coconut milk) sold out of the back of a truck on Chatham Street in the Colombo Fort, Sri Lanka. While this is traditional morning fare for many Sri Lankans, there is a view that it makes the drinker drowsy, and many the sleepy schoolboy has heard a teacher bark the question, “Udeta biwwe kendhadhe?” or “Was it soup you drank in the morning?” Shot in June 2015.
