Leaves into Blades
Waikkal, a small town north of Negombo, in Sri Lanka, is famous for its black-bladed knives and edged implements, unusually forged from the recycled steel of discarded truck leaf springs. Shot for Waterworld Waikkal, in the December issue of Explore Sri Lanka magazine.
Discarded leaf springs from scrapped trucks are straightened to be used as blades.
The straightened leaf springs being heated and shaped in the forge by a blacksmith who has been doing it for over twenty years.
The finished product; Waikkal’s famous knives, known for the great strength of their blades, displayed for sale by the side of the road.
