The Yodha Weva or Giant’s Tank, at Adaikkalamoddai, southeast of Mannar, in northern Sri Lanka, is aptly named, measuring 45.5 square kilometres. Like almost all of Sri Lanka’s large inland water bodies, it is artificial, built by King Dhatusena, between 459 ad 477 AD, to irrigate the arid land of the western Wanni, by damming the Malwatu Oya. Fallen into disrepair during the Sri Lankan civil war that ended in 2009, the reservoir has now been rebuilt and is instrumental in turning the Mannar District back into the rice bowl it once was.
