The Ruwanwelisaya, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka #4 by Son of the Morning Light on

One of the tallest monuments of the ancient world, standing at 103m; taller than the Taj Mahal, and more than twice the height of the Colosseum, the Ruwanweliseya was created by King Dutugemunu, and completed shortly after his death in 137 BC. At the time of its original construction, the central stupa was probably half its current height, similar to the smaller stupa in the photograph, which is one of four that surround the main structure. The original stupa was added to by successive kings, increasing its height and circumference. Sri Lanka, February 2016.
