Drought in the Highlands
The 372-square kilometre Samanalawewa, close to Belihuloya, in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, was created in 1992, with the construction of the Samanala Dam. The reservoir is one of the largest and deepest in the country, providing irrigation and hydro-electricity, but the recent drought has dropped its water level dramatically. Normally, the rise in the foreground, where the photographer is standing would be underwater. Sri Lanka is currently experiencing the longest drought in forty years. January 2016.
