Priceless Doorstep

Priceless Doorstep by Son of the Morning Light on

A beautifully preserved example of a moonstone at the entrance to King Mahasen’s palace in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, dates to the 3rd century BC. A much more recent moonstone from the 10th or 11th centuries AD (late Anuradhapura period), which was removed by a Scottish engineer, William Thyne, in the 1930s and installed in his home in Bristol, was sold in 2016, by Bonhams of London, for 550,000 pounds (almost $700,000). Shot on assignment for Serendib, the inflight magazine of SriLankan Airlines. My story, The First Kingdom of Lanka, ran in the February 2017 issue.
