Flutes & Drums, Anuradhapura
Traditional Sri Lankan flutists and drummers lead a procession of pilgrims through the holy city of Anuradhapura. Established in the 4th century BC as the capital, Anuradhapura is home to the Atamasthana, eight places the Buddha is said to have visited, part of the sixteen Solosmasthana, Buddhism’s holiest sites. The long orange cloth carried by the pilgrims will eventually be wrapped around one of the city’s stupas, most likely the Ruwanwelisaya. Shot on assignment for Serendib, the inflight magazine of SriLankan Airlines. My story, The First Kingdom of Lanka, ran in the February 2017 issue.
