Views from the Devil’s Staircase

Kuda Oya Valley, Central Highlands, Sri Lanka #2 by Son of the Morning Light on

“The Puritan belief that Satan dwelt in Nature could have been born here, where even on the coldest, freshest mountaintops you could smell jungle and that tension between rot and genesis that all jungles give off.”
— Michael Herr Dispatches

The steep-sided Kuda Oya Valley is the base of the Devil’s Staircase, the disused Old Udaweriya Road that climbs 1,200m to the top of the Haputale Ridge. Shot on assignment for Serendib magazine, as part of my story, The Devil’s Staircase, which ran in the March 2017 issue.
