Over the Misty Mountains Cold
“Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old”
— JRR Tolkien The Hobbit
Long before the British named it the Knuckles, the Sinhalese of Kandy called it the Dumbara Kanduwetiya — the Mist-Laden Mountain Range. This was one of the most frightening photos I’ve ever taken, standing in a saddle between two hills at the head of the Dumbaragama Valley, the wind roaring at my back and trying to snatch me off the cliffs. It was like standing up to your chin in the sea while a rip tide pulls you in, the sand slipping away under your feet. I hurriedly took the shots and then had to duck-walk off the slope. I couldn’t do it standing up. Shot on assignment for Serendib magazine as part of my story, The Last Royal Weavers, runs in the July 2017 issue.
