Restoring the Balance, or Unbalancing Nature?
A cleared hillside close to Haputale, in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. The island has lost huge areas of jungle and forest to the plantation and timber industries over the last two centuries, and it isn’t clear if this is more of the same, or part of the government-initiated reforestation programme. Many areas in the Central Highlands are being removed of environmentally harmful pine trees that were introduced in the 19th century; replacing them with endemic trees which will encourage the return of undergrowth.
