Family holidays by train to the “up country”, as the Central Highlands are called here, are a Sri Lankan tradition left over from a 20th century era when the middle class didn’t have as much access to personal transport as it does today. In spite of rapid improvements in living standards, many Sri Lankan families still choose the train for a touch of nostalgia. This picture was part of an assignment for the New York Times Travel‘s Frugal Traveler column, specifically for award-winning travel journalist Lucas Peterson’s piece, "An Island Nation that is Best Savored Slowly". The Night Mail train leaves Colombo around 11pm, making its dawn arrival in Ella perfectly timed for passengers to catch a spectacular sunrise from their carriage windows. The Colombo-Badulla rail route is now rated one of the world’s great train journeys, and includes beautiful tea plantations, awe-inspiring mountainscapes, the now famous Nine Arch Bridge, and the last of the ancient Sinhalese kingdoms, Kandy. Also known as the Thahanci Kele (or Forbidden Forest), this 257-acre sanctuary was once a private reserve of the Kandyan royal family, and closed to commoners. The picture is of the Great Circle, a vast cricket grounds-like lawn popular with visiting families. Beyond, is Royal Palm Avenue, named for the impressive trees spaced down its length like two ranks of guardsmen on parade. The Royal Botanic Gardens were established by British invaders in 1843, but the site had historically been used by the deposed Kandyan kings for various gardens, parks, and temples, dating back to the 14th century. During World War II, the gardens and their administrative buildings were used by Lord Louis Mountbatten, the supreme commander of Allied Forces in Southeast Asia, as his headquarters, and were featured in the David Lean movie, “The Bridge on the River Kwai”. This photo was taken on assignment for the New York Times’ Frugal Traveler column, specifically for award-winning travel journalist Lucas Peterson’s piece, "An Island Nation that is Best Savored Slowly".
