The Soft Arm of the Law

Heavy but seemingly benign police presence at the Pro-Democracy Rally in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Women police constables were almost equally represented amongst their male colleagues which, along with the very obvious lack of firearms, batons, and riot gear, helped soften the security measures. Thousands of pro-democracy protestors gathered on 30th October to demand Parliament be reconvened after President Maithripala Sirisena disbanded the cabinet, sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, prorogued Parliament, and appointed a new cabinet over the weekend, plunging the country into a constitutional crisis that remains unresolved almost a week later.
