Long Walk with King Coconuts #2 by Son of the Morning Light on 500px.com

Thambili, as it is known locally, in Sinhalese, the king coconut provides a refreshing drink, be it it on a sunny beach or a misty mountain. In this dawn photograph, a vendor carries a heavy load of them across the Nine Arch Bridge, close to Ella, in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, in anticipation, no doubt, of the coming crowds of tourists. The historic stone viaduct is a popular spot for sightseers, located as it is on the Colombo-Badulla rail route, now considered one of the world’s great train journeys. Shot on assignment for The New York Times, specifically for award-winning travel writer Lucas Peterson’s piece, An Island Nation that is Best Savored Slowly, which ran in the Frugal Traveler column on January 30th 2019.
