ATOP THE SIGIRIYA ROCK FORTRESS, SRI LANKA #15 — Sigiriya is a 200m high flat-topped volcanic plug on top of which is a ruined palace and gardens, built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa I of Anuradhapura. Sigiriya, and the city below it functioned as the capital of the Anuradhapura Kingdom until Kashyapa’s death and the defeat of his army; after which, the capital returned to Anuradhapura. Sigiriya became once more the Buddhist monastery it had been before Kashyapa’s arrival, and continued as such until the 14th century, when it was abandoned. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the rock served for brief periods as an outpost of the Kandyan Kingdom before being abandoned again. In 1831, it was discovered by Maj Jonathan Forbes of the 78th Highlanders. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, one of seven in Sri Lanka. Shot for my story on Sigiriya and Pidurangala, which runs in the April 2018 issue of Serendib magazine. SIGIRIYA, FROM PIDURANGALA #3 — The Sigiriya rock fortress in north-central Sri Lanka, as seen from Pidurangala, a mountain 800m to the north. Beyond Sigiriya, seen here in the morning glow, is the Sigiriya Tank, built by King Kashyapa I when he made Sigiriya his capital in the 5th century. In the distance is the Araula Mountain Range, the northern foothills of the Central Highlands, close to Dambulla. Shot for my photo story on Sigiriya and Pidurangala, which runs in the April 2018 issue of Serendib magazine. DOWNTOWN COLOMBO & THE PORT CITY #4 — The financial district of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital, with the Bank of Ceylon and World Trade Centre buildings, the Beira Lake in the foreground, the new port extension in the upper right corner, and the Port City project in the background. A trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) vessel can be seen in the distance, pumping sand to reclaim land from the Indian Ocean, on which the Port City will be built.
