The Working Man

Mayday is only sometimes called by its full title: International Labour Day, or Workers’ Day. And behind the political rallying and election campaigning that has hijacked this day, is the humble, yet steadfast, worker. Over the years I have spent walking through Colombo with my camera, the naattami has featured in my pictures too many times to count, and I don’t think any other job role has epitomised to me the image of the worker more. So here he is, on this day, on his cart, towering over the mud of 4th Cross Street, in the Pettah. Shot last year, a few days before Christmas.
