Colombo, Tuesday 7th April 2020. Day 18 of the lockdown.Exchanging his school desk for a table in the corner of the kitchen, my nephew takes down his homework off the internet.
Niranjala, a part-time hairdresser, takes a break from studying to be an accountant to listen to some music in her tiny living room in Pamankada, Colombo. Shot in September 2017, for “The Connected Sri Lankan”, a collaborative study by J Walter Thompson and TNS Kantar, on how Sri Lankans engage with the internet.
The Pichcha Mal Viharaya, the largest of Medirigiriya’s five image houses, often attracts devotees to pray and recite verses amongst its fallen stones and crumbling statues. The late 7th Century complex is believed to have been built by King Aggabodhi IV of Anuradhapura, approximately 30km north of Polonnaruwa, on the ruins of the lost Mandalagiri Viharaya.
