Mosque in the Morning Light, Fort Galle, Sri Lanka

The Meeran Jumma Masjid as seen from Point Utrecht on the ramparts of Fort Galle, Sri Lanka. Built in 1910, the mosque unusually follows the style of a Portuguese Baroque cathedral. The fort itself dates back to 15th Century Portuguese fortifications that were then extensively expanded and built on by the Dutch in the 17th Century, and the British in the 18th Century. Morning over the section of rampart connecting the Triton and Vlagklip Bastions of the 17th Century Dutch fort of Galle, Sri Lanka. On the left is the old town inside the walls of the fort. The Vlagklip Bastion (also known by its later English name, Flagrock) is the southernmost point of Fort Galle and, beyond it, the Indian Ocean stretches 8,000km, almost unbroken, to the Antarctic.
