Light Moments

Morning over the Valachenai Lagoon, Sri Lanka, shot from Nasuvantivu. February 2024. Though I’d set up with my tripod by 6am, the eastern skies were stingy. I was lucky to catch this brief moment of colour before the tail end of the monsoon blew in and I packed up and headed off.

I first read Johns’ words at one of his exhibitions, in Köln, in the late 1990s and, over the years, it has come to represent more than ever the way I see my photography. I often find the pictures inside my photographs days, sometimes weeks, after I have shot them.
