A Long Tea Break

The creamiest sweetest glass of tea I’ve ever had, in a land known for its sweet strong tea. At least half sweetened condensed milk, the boiling tea is whipped up into a froth by being poured back and forth from a great height. Sammanthurai, Sri Lanka. October 2023.

I photographed John a year ago; and he was still there last month, purveying his super tea all along 4th Cross Street and the surrounding warren of lanes and alleys that make up the Keyzer Street Market. From his handcart he offers the naattamis, traders, and lorry drivers a refreshing break in their work of hauling, stocking, and selling the dry goods that keep the city fed.
