An unusually well-dressed naattami (the urban Sri Lankan version of a dockyard stevedore) loads his distinctive two-wheeled cart with sacks of lentils trucked in from a mill outside Colombo. Fresh produce and dry goods arrive each morning in the city’s market district of Pettah, and must be unloaded and carried down a warren of narrow streets and lanes to the wholesale stores where they are bought and traded to keep the restaurants, supermarkets, and grocery stores of Colombo stocked.
